Don’t Exceed Your Skill Set

It’s a really bad sign when your weekend do-it-yourself project turns into a balancing act. You shouldn’t take on projects that exceed your tools or skill set. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t expand your skill set, but you need to know when to seek advice from an expert. The same goes for the financial planning process.

From time to time, you might run into a prospect that needs services beyond your skill set. That’s OK. If you’re facing large cases that require specialized planning outside your comfort zone, ask for help. Otherwise you will squander tremendous opportunities and could potentially ruin your reputation. It is much better to seek advice and ask for help, than to make a catastrophic error on a high-profile, high-net-worth client.
